If you are thinking of switching to natural and organic cosmetics don’t forget to integrate a mineral sunscreen: these sunscreens are made without the harmful and irritating chemicals that alter hormones and the environment that chemical protectors contain.
For years we have been led to believe that only chemical sunscreens could prevent aging and protect us against skin cancer. But lately we have already begun to hear about the risks of them and the benefits of mineral protectants.
The main difference between them is the way they are formulated (both in a laboratory) and how they protect the skin from UV radiation.
1) Chemical sunscreen (which ones to avoid and why)
They are made from synthetic ingredients that work by creating a chemical reaction in which UV light is converted into heat. Most are made from harmful chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate (octylmethoxycinnamate), homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, and avobenzone, which are endocrine disruptors. These can affect the functioning of our reproductive systems and our metabolism. Also, all of these chemicals are extremely bad for the environment.
2) Mineral or physical sunscreen
They contain: minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are mineral ingredients that settle on the surface of the skin, reflecting the rays (UV + UVA + UVB) and preventing them from penetrating deep into the skin.
Finally, we would like to talk about some tiny particles that are found in many of the products we consume in our day to day: Nanoparticles. When these tiny substances (in this case they are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), are incorporated into a sunscreen, they leave an opaque white film on the skin. Because they are very small, they can be absorbed but the impact is very negative. That is why at KŌNSE Beauty we opted for a “non-nano” sunscreen and we recommend our Nuori and SeventyOne Percent Brands brands.
Here we leave you some recommendations to continue enjoying the summer while taking care of your skin.
And you, do you recommend us a brand?
